Germination
Sow indoors. Sow onto moist well-drained seed compost. Just cover the seed with vermiculite or soil. Ideal temp. 12°C. Keep soil moist but not wet at all times. Germination takes 15-21 days but can be erratic even with ideal conditions. If germination does not occur cold stratify, move to 4°C for 2-4 weeks then return to warmth. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots. Gradually acclimatise and plant out after 10-15 days with 45cm spacing.
Growing
Prefers cool places in semi shade, ideally a deep soil. In full sun requires more moisture. In exposed areas may require staking.
Cultivation
Cut down stems once flowering is over. To maintain vigour divide plant every 2-3 years as soon as growth begins in spring(Mar-April). Large divisions can be replanted outside, smaller ones overwintered in a greenhouse for planting out the following spring.
