Germination
Sow in a cold frame in autumn/winter or indoors from late winter. Easiest to sow into the cold frame. Sow 2mm deep into moist, well-drained seed compost. Allow natural winter cold to offer ideal conditions for germination to occur as the weather warms in spring. Indoors sow as before, ideal temp. 22°C for 6 weeks then cold stratify. Move to -4°C-+4°C for 6-8 weeks then return to warmth 10°C for germination. If germination has not occurred after 6-8 weeks repeat cycle. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots and grow on under glass for their first winter. Plant out when large enough and when danger of frost has passed.
Growing
Prefers a moist, loamy soil in partial or full shade. Light woodland is ideal.
Cultivation
Will self-seed when growing in a suitable position. Propagate by division in spring or autumn.
