Germination
Sow indoors. Surface sow onto moist well-drained seed compost, just cover seed with a sprinkling of soil. Ideal temp. 15-20°C. Germination takes 14-21 days. Once germination occurs transplant seedlings with 5cm spacing. Grow on in cooler, but not cold conditions. Acclimatise and plant out once danger of frost has passed in rows 30cm apart. Plant with the upper, swollen part of the root on the surface of the soil. Can be sown directly in Apr-May.
Growing
Prefers a fertile well draining soil in full sun. Remove lower leaves in the summer to expose the crowns. Keep well watered. Weed as required.
Cultivation
Flavour improves are first frost. Crop can be left in the soil until required by the kitchen throughout winter and into spring if the soil is well draining. Will store for 2 weeks after harvesting.
