Germination

Direct sow into any firm well-drained soil. Sow thinly 10mm deep into rows spaced 30cm apart. Avoid planting into recently manured soil. If the ground is very wet plant into raised beds. When large enough to handle thin to 25cm spacing. Can sow early indoors 10mm deep into moist well-drained seed sowing compost. Propagate 10-15°C until germination occurs. Germination takes 10-14 days. Once germinated grow on in cool conditions. Acclimatise and plant out after danger of frost has passed with 25 cm spacing.

Growing

Once planted out cover with netting or fleece to prevent attack from birds and insects. Water thoroughly until established then water only if the soil is dry. Weed between rows.

Cultivation

Harvest individual leaves as and when required or pull up part of the clump for the Leek-like stems. Use immediately as they do not store well.
