Germination
Sow indoors from autumn-early spring. Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Cover seed with 4mm of vermiculite. Ideal temp. 15-20°C. Keep moist but not wet. Germination takes 2-4 weeks approx. Autumn sowings may not emerge until spring. After germination grow on in cooler conditions, 15°C approx. Transplant seedlings, in small clumps, when large enough to handle to 12cm pots and grow on. Acclimatise and plant out after danger of frost has passed.
Growing
Prefers a dry, rocky soil in full sun. Will tolerate any ordinary garden soil, including a heavy, clay soil. Excellent drainage is preferred. Slow-growing and slow to establish. Requires little attention. If placed in shade the plant is likely to drop.
Cultivation
Although mature seed drops to the ground( hence the common name) this plant does not self-seed freely. Can be propagated by seed. Cut back stems, close to ground level, in Feb-Mar.
