Germination

Sow in a cold frame in autumn. Sow indoors at any time. In a cold frame, surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Just cover seed with a sprinkling of soil. Autumn warmth followed by natural winter cold should offer ideal conditions for germination to occur as the weather warms again in spring. Indoors, sow, place somewhere warm, 18-22°C, for 2-4 weeks then cold stratify at -4-$°C, a fridge is ideal, for 4-6 weeks. Move to warmth for germination, 5-12°C. Germination takes 1-3 months approx. but can be erratic. Repeated cycles of warmth/cold will eventually offer germination. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle. Acclimatise and plant out after danger of frost has passed.

Growing

Prefers a moist but well-drained soil in full or partial sun. Ideal for a woodland garden. Can be a little tricky to grow/cultivate. May not flower every year. Hardy to -20°C. May benefit from a dry, protective winter mulch.

Cultivation

Requires little attention. Will spread slowly via offsets or by seed.
