Germination

Sow indoors or under glass 8-10 weeks before last expected frost. Can be sown directly after last expected frost. Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Do not cover seed, simply press into the soil. Place in a propagator or cover with a clear plastic bag to maintain humidity. Ideal temp. 17-22°C. Germination takes 1-2 weeks. Transplant seeds when large enough to handle to individual pots. Grow on under glass if using as a house plant. If planting out wait until any danger of frost has passed and the plants are at least 7cm tall.

Growing

Can be grown as a perennial indoor house plant or grown in the garden as an annual. Prefers a consistently moist soil in partial sun. The colour of the plant is improved in indirect sunlight. Vibrant foliage is also improved if flowers and removed at an early stage. If growing indoors try to maintain a humid environment. This can be achieved by misting the plant or placing the pot on pebbles in a pot tray, where the tray always contains water. Pinch out the top two leaves on each stem to encourage a bushier growth habit. Will not tolerate frost.

Cultivation

Propagate by cuttings taken at any time of year.
